Title: Sulfur Oxide Measurement In Aircraft Turbine Engine Exhaust
Author: Gerald R. Slusher
Abstract: A limited investigation was conducted to measure the oxides of sulfur in aircraft turbine engine exhaust. The objective was to establish the ratio of sulfur trioxide (SO3) to sulfur dioxide (SO2) to be utilized in support of the climatic impact assessment program. The SO3 concentration was found to be 13.8 percent of the SO2 concentration as determined by wet chemistry analysis. Sulfur recovered in the samples was approximately 50 percent of the total sulfur in the fuel.

Title: A Small-Scale Enclosure for Characterizing the Fire Buildup Potential of a Room
Author: W.J. Parker, B.T. Lee
Abstract: A 0.76 by 0.76 m (30 by 30 inch) enclosure with a 0.61 m (24 inch) high ceiling was used to model some fires in a 3 x 3 x 2.4 m (10 x 10 x 8 ft) burnout room. Temperatures, oxygen concentrations, air velocity, and conductive and radiative heat fluxes were measured. The highest average air temperature in the upper part of the room was taken as a measure of the fire buildup potential of the room. Upper air temperatures attained in the model were similar in most cases to those in the fullscale compartment. From energy balance considerations this air temperature was related ,to the oxygen depletion in the room and was shown to correlate well with the oxygen content of the combustion gas and air exhausting from the model and full-scale room fires.

Title: Evaluation of a High-Capacity, Firefighting Foam-Dispensing System
Author: George B. Geyer, Lawrence M. Neri, Charles H. Urban
Abstract: A series of six tests was conducted using a single barrel mechanical foam nozzle discharging 1,800 gallons of foam solution per minute (English/metric conversion factors are given in Appendix A). Three experiments were conducted with protein foam and three using aqueous-firm-forming-foam (AFFF). The tests were designed to dispense foam solution at a fixed rate in simulated full-scale fire modeling experiments in which the fire area was smaller than the total area of foam application, thereby conserving fuel and reducing atmospheric contamination. The time required to foam-cover concentric circular diked areas of 12,000, 18,000 and 36,000 square feet containing a three-dimensional fire in a 2,827 square foot fire-pool was determined. The foam quality and ground patterns produced by each agent were determined for solution rates of 840 and 1,800 gallons per minute.

Title: Chemical Research Projects Office - Fuel Tank Sealant Review
Author: R.W. Rosser, J.A. Parker
Abstract: The status of high-temperature fuel tank sealants for military and potentially commercial supersonic aircraft is examined. The interrelationships of NASA's sealants program comprise synthesis and development of new fluoroether elastomers, sealant prediction studies, flight simulation and actual flight testing of best state-of-the-art fluorosilicone sealants. The technical accomplishments of theseprojects are reviewed.
