Engine Halon Replacenet

Description of Other Related Items of Interest for the Project

The following is a listing of other items which are related to the project (PDF Files), but do not have a direct part in the achievement of the goal.

  1. A brief history of Halon 1301 in aircraft engine nacelle fire suppression systems and the accompanying development of nacelle gas concentration instrumentation. The discussion focuses on the evolutionary process by which Halon 1301 came to be the wide-spread answer for modern day aircraft engine nacelle fire protection; based primarily on FAA literature.
  2. AC 20-100, 1977. This Advisory Circular (AC) expands on the concept of engine nacelle fire extinguishing systems. This is an FAA document describing the process to demonstrate the acceptable distribution of a gaseous agent used for nacelle fire extinguishment. Additionally, it provides more background information on the subject.
  3. Halon simulation during extinguishing system development and certification. The discussion goes into greater explanatory depth, provides comparative graphs, and bibliographic information. The compressible fluid HFC-125 has been shown to mimic Halon 1301 if stored properly in the extinguisher. This behavior is very near to a 1:1 relationship in environments characteristically exposed to air flow; i.e. the engine nacelle.
  4. Correction of Halonyzer discrepancies during gas analysis. This discussion addresses discrepancies noted during recent testing. One procedure resolving the concern is provided.
