The Copenhagen Admendment to the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the stratospheric ozone has resulted in the cessation of halon production as of December 31, 1993. Halon is the extinguishing agent used in all U.S. production aircraft for engines, cargo compartments, lavoratories and hand-held extinguishers because of its combined fire fighting effectiveness and low toxicity
